A Castile Soap Fruit and Vegetable Wash
A quarter teaspoon in a sink of water. The most diluted recipe on the label, and the one where using more is actively worse.
A quarter teaspoon in a sink of water. The most diluted recipe on the label, and the one where using more is actively worse.
This is the recipe where people most often assume the label made a typo. A quarter of a teaspoon, in a whole sink of water, feels like nothing. It is deliberate.
Fruit & Veggie Wash: Add ¼ tsp to a sink or large bowl of water. Rinse produce with clean, cool water.
Produce is porous. Berries, leafy greens and mushrooms in particular will absorb whatever they sit in, and soap tastes like soap. At a quarter teaspoon in several liters of water the concentration is high enough to help lift surface dirt and residues and low enough that a clean-water rinse removes it completely.
Use more and you will taste it. This is the one recipe on the label where the instinct to add a bit extra makes the result worse rather than better.
Fill the sink or a large bowl with cool water, stir in the quarter teaspoon, and let firm produce sit for a minute or two. Move it around with your hands. Then rinse thoroughly under clean, cool running water. That is the step that matters.
Delicate items like raspberries and soft herbs do better with a brief swirl than a soak. Firm items like apples, potatoes, carrots and citrus can take a longer soak and a light scrub.
It is for the dirt, handling residue and general grime that produce picks up between a field and your kitchen. It is a wash, not a treatment, and no claim is being made here about what it removes beyond that.
Anything you wash and then put back in the fridge wet will spoil faster. Pat dry or spin greens before they go away. If you are not eating it today, it is usually better to wash immediately before use rather than in advance.
The soap is unscented and contains no essential oils, synthetic dyes or foaming agents, which is what makes it usable around food at all.
