WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

My Dear Readers,

Unscented Whole Naturals Castile Soap is the one essential product you need in your house. From a cleaning solution, to shampoo, you will find the versatility of Castile soap astounding! As a frequent reader of my blog, you’ll know that you have the power to turn your liquid soap into nearly anything you want! Adding essential oils is a fabulous way to customize your recipe and get the best aroma! For cleaning, I Iove adding citrus scents and for bath and beauty care, I tend to favor the floral scent. Right now, I’m obsessed with lavender. We often hear about essential oils being used in aromatherapy, but they can be used for so much more! Let’s dive in to talk about: What are essential oils? How are they made?

What are Essential Oils

Essential oils are compounds extracted from various sections of plants. Through cold pressing, or even distillation, oils are obtained. When you purchase essential oils, they typically have been combined with another carrier oil like coconut, jojoba, apricot, olive, almond or argan oils. (We’ll talk about carrier oils another time!) Through the oils, the plant’s scent is captured, giving you this fabulous smelling oil, ready to be used in so many ways!

How do they work?

Whether or not essential oils can exert any physical effect remains to be scientifically proven but here’s what I know: When I add my essential oils to my Castile Soap, not only does my home feel clean and fresh, my mood improves too!

Essential oils do not feel oily: they are called "oils" because they contain the oil-soluble chemicals in the plant

Where shouldn’t you use essential oils?

  1. Don't apply essential oils directly on the skin - their aroma is the perfect additive to enhance your unscented Whole Naturals Castile Soap, but should not be used unless diluted.

  2. Pets - (as well as humans) can experience chemical burns with the direct contact of essential oils onto the skin. Did you know: Cats are especially sensitive to many essential oils - externally and even orally! Even just a couple of licks can be harmful.

  3. Babies - Because babies have sensitive skin, the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians suggestions that essential oils should not be used on infants younger than 3 months.

  4. Food - Essential oils are not safe to consume and can cause significant poisoning even if small amounts are ingested. (However, there are essential oils approved for safe consumption and internal use).
